Qhasana Building Upgrading

Buildings Maintenance Unit is responsible for the direct implementation of major projects, day to day maintenance and prestige infrastructure projects in Bhisho as well as co-ordination of Public Works infrastructure projects.

This unit recently undertook an investigation after an increased number of cases of defects due to mal-functioning of ablution facilities at Qhasana Building.

It was discovered that common areas such as the kitchen, passage areas, foyers, staircases and ablution facilities were never renovated since the building was constructed back in the 1980s except by attending to reported defects.

As such, a major renovation to the structure was undertaken in July 2016 and was completed in July 2018.

The upgrade focused on common areas resulting in the building more accessible and ablution facilities user-friendly even to people with disabilities.

Ntombekhaya Rave (Sis Ntosh), who is the General Assistant said “These renovations have motivated us even more to keep the building clean. It is easy now to spot any dirty area because the building is brighter. I am always on the lookout for any dirt that might have been missed”.

This project which was awarded to Mathew and Son Trading CC costed R12, 225, 263.50 (Incl. VAT) for the duration of two years.

Norman Bholi, Deputy Director: Buildings Maintenance said “The renovations have changed the image of common areas at Qhasana Building to a much better look. The improvements have also played an important role in increasing the life span of the building”.
