The Eastern Cape Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) MEC Siphokazi Lusithi, joined traditional leaders, community members, government representatives and various stakeholders during the Heritage Day celebrations held at Kroza Great Place in Qumbu.
The celebration brought together people from different backgrounds to honour South Africa’s rich cultural heritage, celebrate diversity and promote unity and social cohesion.
MEC Lusithi joined Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane during a walkabout of the exhibition stalls, where they engaged with exhibitors and viewed a variety of displays showcasing the province’s rich cultures, traditions and heritage.
The exhibition created a platform for communities and cultural groups to showcase their traditional attire, indigenous food, crafts and other elements of their cultural identity.
The colourful displays reflected the diverse heritage of the OR Tambo District and the Eastern Cape.
The occasion was further elevated by an inspiring keynote address delivered by Premier Mabuyane, setting a powerful and uplifting tone for the day’s celebrations.
Emphasising his commitment to fighting crime and building safer communities, Premier Mabuyane reaffirmed the provincial government’s determination to confront crime while applauding members of the South African Police Service for their dedication, courage and tireless service to communities across the province.
The Premier commended law enforcement agencies for their continued efforts to protect communities and encouraged them to remain steadfast in strengthening public safety and combating crime.
The Premier’s address was preceded by a spectacular performance from Lwandiso Makenke, a praise singer from Centane, whose powerful words brought the province’s heritage, history and traditions vividly to life.
Adding further significance to the occasion, the Acting Chairperson of the House of Traditional and Khoisan leaders, Nkosi Gwazinamba Matanzima, delivered a message emphasising the importance of respecting, honouring and preserving South Africa’s diverse cultures and traditions.
His message reminded attendees that heritage is not only a reflection of where communities come from, but also a foundation that strengthens identity, unites communities and inspires future generations to carry the rich cultural legacy of the Eastern Cape forward with pride.
The celebration featured traditional music, dance, cultural performances and traditional cuisine, creating a vibrant atmosphere as communities came together to celebrate their heritage. The event also highlighted the important role of traditional institutions in preserving customs, traditions and indigenous knowledge systems and ensuring that these are passed on to future generations
As the day’s celebrations drew to a close at Kroza Great Place in Qumbu, a fitting vote of thanks was delivered by the King of AmaMpondomise, His Majesty Kumkani Zwelozuko Matiwane, who expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to making the celebration a memorable occasion. “Siyabulela. Masiphile ngesithethe, masikhule ngelifa lethu” added Kumkani Zwelozuko.
The day of heritage, culture, identity and community was brought to a meaningful close with appreciation for the traditional leaders, government representatives, stakeholders, cultural groups, performers and community members who participated in the celebrations.
From the rich showcase of traditions to the inspiring messages shared throughout the programme, the celebration served as a reminder of the enduring value of our heritage and the collective responsibility to preserve and carry it forward for generations to come.
