A delegation led by MEC, Thandiswa Marawu, spent two weeks visiting various schools in the Chris Hani District Municipality. The visit was part of annual Back to School campaign which seeks to give support to learners and teachers after school vacation. This year’s focus was to check progress, share ideas and give solutions on issues raised in the previous year.

MEC Marawu applauded the Premier’s approach of including primary schools. “I applaud the Premier for this initiative because high schools are based on the survival of feeder schools”. “Visiting them to ensure their well-being will go a long way to prepare for future” said the MEC.

The delegation found many challenges faced by schools which range from poor infrastructure, non-delivery of school materials (textbooks) and poor sanitation. It was then suggested that the visits should be quarterly, to check progress on the resolutions taken in the beginning of the year. Further suggestion was to allow schools, communities together with ward councilors to work together in using government facilities (war rooms).
